Material Meaning | Masonry and the Language of Architecture Case Studies in Design Collaboration and Construction  

Description: 

In our industry, defined by the three pillars of design, construction, and ownership (OAC), the  architect/contractor relationship has become ever closer and intertwined. However, we often do  not speak the same language, approaching the project with different priorities and motivations. Understanding each other better sets the foundation for more productive collaborations. This  course aims to pull the curtain back on how architects think, work, and prioritize project needs, and  how architects and builders can, and have, successfully collaborated to create meaningful work for  our clients and communities. 

Learning Objective 1:  Understand the architect’s process and priorities when engaging clients and designing buildings. 

Learning Objective 2: Discuss and understand design-assist and how to best leverage it during the design process. 

Learning Objective 3: Examine how design intent is established, communicated, and maintained throughout the project's  life – Representation vs. Constructability. 

Learning Objective 4:  Through case studies, explore architectural masonry detailing from conceptual design and construction documents, to execution in the field. 

Bios: 

LAST Architects’ Principal & Co-Founder, Brad Lang, AIA focuses on creating environments that  support people in learning, teaching, and collaborating. Brad has designed numerous awardwinning buildings for institutional clients across the southwest region. Combining a deep  understanding of environment, context, and space, he empowers design teams to focus on creative  problem-solving to uncover the most appropriate and inspiring solutions for the project. His  passion for design and education has led to multiple teaching positions at prestigious architectural  schools, where his skill as an educator has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects  and the National Architectural Accreditation Board. 

LAST Architects’ Principal & Co-Founder, Eric Sterner explores the human connections to the  landscape while bridging the theories and practices of psychology, architecture, music, literature,  and art into his work. Eric is responsible for many notable award-winning architectural projects in  the southwest and lectures nationally on design and construction practices – facilitating awareness  and opportunities for responsible design in the southwest. Eric’s ability to collaborate with complex  user-groups and aid in both the acquisition and procedures for developing projects has yielded  praise from the American Institute of Architects, Engineering News Record, and multiple trade  magazines.
